Time to Spring Clean Your Finances

Time to Spring Clean your Finances As you begin to pack away the winter coats and de-thaw your plants and lawns, don’t forget to dust off your financial records and goals in the prime spring cleaning months.

Here are five tips to institute now to help keep your finances on track and head into the spring and summer months with strong savings goals.

1. Capitalize on tax season.

Maybe you already filed your 2016 tax returns. If you haven’t, the sooner the better. The chances of tax identity fraud increase the longer you delay, so put off the inevitable and file. If you owe, create your game plan to pay the government back. If you get a small windfall, now is your chance to pay off a looming debt, or apply a big chunk of cash to one of your savings goals.

2. Check your credit score.

Each year, you’re entitled to a free credit report from each of the three major bureaus at annualcreditreport.com. Identity theft an ever-growing issue, and the reality is that errors sometimes arise; it’s important to monitor your credit and address issues as soon as possible. Errors or theft can sometimes show up on just one of the major bureau’s reports, so remember to check all three: Experian, Equifax and TransUnion.

3. Clean up your financial paperwork.

As you’re cleaning out closets and drawers, don’t forget to take the time to go through your key financial documents. Put the paper shredder to work and destroy unnecessary receipts, tax returns that are more than seven years old and policies or warranties that are no longer needed. For key financial documents, consider storing them in a fire-proof safe. Make it a habit to review the essentials at least once a year.

4. Don’t forget your wallet.

Due to the ongoing threat of identity theft, store your social security card in a safe place at home and only retrieve it when you need it for certain circumstances, such as employment verification.

5. Set up automatic payments.

We live in a digital world, so embrace it. Set up automatic payments so you never run the risk of forgetting to pay a bill, and manage your finances online with eBanking. Sure, it takes a little time to get everything set up, but once you’ve loaded your various accounts, you can easily manage your bills and finances from the comfort of your home, 24/7.

Taking stock of your finances several times a year makes sense, so add the springtime season to your review calendar. A clean home and a sparkling financial report card mean bright days lie ahead.
